Clinton, IA - Clinton LumberKings' outfielder Kalian Sams is the Midwest League Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending June 5, announced today by the Midwest League Office in Beloit, WI. Sams hit .429 with four doubles, a triple, four home runs, 12 RBI, nine runs scored and five stolen bases to become Clinton's first winner of a MWL weekly award this season.
Sams is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak and a six-game RBI streak and helped the LumberKings to a 5-1 road trip at Fort Wayne (3-0 against the TinCaps) and Lake County (2-1 against the Captains). The fourth-year Midwest League veteran is hitting .321 with a team-high seven HR and 18 RBI in 24 games with the LumberKings this season after starting the year in advanced-A High Desert, where he hit .200 with six HR and 10 RBI in 20 games.
A native of The Hague, South Holland, Netherlands, Sams is the first LumberKing to win the Offensive Player of the Week award since Vinnie Catricala did so from August 22 through the 29 last season.
